We have developed a virtual reference desk - an “information-transfer station” or ITS - that uses Western experts, libraries, and the Internet to provide answers to urgent and complex questions.
"SOS: Young girl slowly being eaten away by a strange disease. Please help us diagnose it." The ITS in Medicine sent the girl's medical history to doctors around the world and relayed their opinions to the Beijing treatment team which helped clinch the diagnosis. This was the first such use of the Internet to save a life in China.
"Please send the most current criminal codes from Western Europe and opinions of experts about such laws." The ITS in Law sent dozens of books and documents to a group of 80 researchers at the National People’s Congress to help them draft new legislation.
The ITS in Conservation will be launched when funds permit. "Information-transfer Stations for Developing Countries in Asia" (detailed description of the need for, and operation of an ITS).
